I have been reading a lot about charisma lately, and it can be tricky since it’s a pretty intangible and elusive subject. While I am still figuring out what it is, I can tell you a lot about what it’s not. Let’s take a look at 5 archetypes you want to avoid.

The Comedian

Being funny is pretty essential to charisma, but like anything else, when it’s misused, it can turn on you.

There is a balance to strike between making people laugh, but without having them lose respect for you because of it.

One huge way to go wrong is to overdo it. The more you overdo it, the more likely you are to use it when it wasn’t appropriate and make people believe you are not the person to talk to about anything serious.

I’m especially guilty of this. Growing up, I often used humor as a crutch for socializing. I was insecure and didn’t feel like I had much to say, but felt pressured to say something to build connections. I told jokes, but ultimately it was like a shield blocking anyone from focusing on me personally and getting closer.
