Ancient Torture Methods You’ve Never Heard of
History is terrible. It’s forever shocking how little the people of yore respected human life. Especially if you were a ruler who felt betrayed. Many of us of heard of the popular punishments like being drawn and quartered, crucified, hung, or the guillotine, but there are many who have been buried in the pages of time, desired to be forgotten. Here are 8 of the grimmest ones I dug up for you. Be advised, it’s pretty gross even if you’re into Saw movies and shit.
1. Scaphism
Coming from the Greek word for “boat”, this Persian execution method used around the dawn of A.D involved a person being fastened to a boat or inside of two boats bolted together. The person was smothered with milk and honey and sent out to drift in the water. The person would slowly be eaten alive by flies and sometimes vermin for as long as 17–20 days.
2. Lingchi
Have you heard the expression, “Death by a thousand cuts”?
The saying has its direct roots in an ancient Chinese execution. You might’ve guessed it by now…a person is hoisted up and delivered lots of tiny cuts. To add to the horror, the cuts gradually turn to slices and the removal of appendages…
