It’s amazing how many friends I lost during the pandemic. And I’m not even talking about those who actually died from COVID. I am talking about friendships that fell apart based on ideological reasons. Political divides can no longer be avoided anymore, as they can create separation which destroys friendships. And it doesn't always happen how you think it would….
1. Invitation of Death
One of my friends would often organize a night out to go to a club, bar, restaurant, maybe bowling. I was invited during the pandemic but kindly declined, indicating that it’s at the height of the pandemic right now. They seemed offended but urged that everyone going is healthy and that I need to go. I did not want to get into the political discussion about it but just said I cannot go, mostly because I have parents and in-laws that are old and that I can't risk it. The person scoffed and thought I was being ridiculous.
They went out that night and all got COVID. The friend who invited me never talked to me again.
