Nearing 100 articles in my first year, I took a look at what’s working and what isn't. I looked at views, reads, claps, comments, but ultimately based its success on how much money it made. A trend immediately revealed itself.

Simple + Natural= Profound

My best articles which earned hundreds had the simplest title and story. They always took the least time (20–40 minutes). The simpler the story, the more people find it relatable. Medium readers are not stupid, but they need to relate to the story quickly to incentivize themselves to keep reading. If they relate to your story, then they can trust in you to can solve their problem.

People find stories attractive when they promise to answer a problem associated with the most base human emotions. Love and Hate. Fear and Hope. Fun and Boredom. Your title and introduction should serve to grab their interest by efficiently addressing a problem that is dear to people’s hearts and quickly making a promise to offer some value towards that issue.

Making an unclear title and starting off too dense is a surefire way to keep readers from clicking or keep reading your story
