There are 5 famous regrets of the dying popularized by Australian hospice nurse Bronnie Ware, but I found them a bit vague and left me wondering what they meant. This is what I found out.

1. “I wish I had the courage to live true to myself, not the life others expected of me”

These folks were people-pleasers and fulfilled the roles that people thought up for them so they could keep everyone happy, but depriving themselves. They became a lawyer because it’s what their parents wanted. They were totally gay but didn't tell anyone because they were afraid of being abandoned.

Once you get to the end, you realize that was your shot, and you don't get another. If you really wanted to become a singer, you could’ve, but you didn't because you were scared of the consequences. Now the largest consequence is never being fully known, known to others, known to yourself.

If you don’t want to have this regret later, take the mask off for a little while. Let people see who you are, show them your teeth. Be who you need to be, it may not be what was convenient for everyone, but you are on a mission. Get more used to saying “no”.
