Totally agree, this is a blind spot of the article.

What if one lived virtuously, and through this virtue, just happened to acquire wealth or receive reward. Wouldn't then it be fine?

It's the other way around that I see as the problem. I am suspicious when CEOs and Silicon Valley commonly adopt philosophies like Stoicism and Buddhism. Detachment from earthly goods, meditation, mindfulness seem like convenient ways to reconcile and detach from what one is actually doing. Why don't they celebrate Ayn Rand, which is really the model they are using to get where they are?

IMO, it is the 2021 version of the CEO who is ruthless during the day, and sees a dominatrix by night.
