While the concept of Ikigai pretty much means “purpose of life”, it so much more. Ikigai is practiced by the Okinawans of Japan, a people famous for flaunting the most centenarians on Earth. Luckily, an author Hector Garcia later wrote a book that put focus on this practice. It’s one of those books, if you don’t have enough time to read it, you really need to read it. But in case you still don’t want to, I am going to break down the most important points so you can apply them today.

Food

Okinawans practicing Ikigai follow the 80% Rule. You eat until you’re 80% full. The idea is that you don't eat to 100% satiation because it will make you tired and unmotivated. There’s something about still craving a little that adds momentum to the day.

Okinawans stress “eating the rainbow.” Imagine your last meal, was it all brown/tan? Ikigai promotes the most amount of ingredients with the vastest array of colors. Different colors usually mean different vitamins and nutrients so you get everything you need. Even in our Western society, if you hit up Chipotle or Subway, tell them to “bring it through the garden” and get the most veggies and toppings that you can get.
