Is The “Diet Tax” Killing Us?

In a country where obesity ravages our population, you would think eating better would be rewarded. Nope. Eating out during the course of my life, I have discovered something I have to call the “Diet Tax.”

What Is It?

Diet-centric food options when eating out at restaurants are disproportionately more expensive. These higher costs can make healthy eating less affordable and provide incentives to eat more food that makes us fat and sick. It’s immensely frustrating as the food-service industry has finally started to offer options for those on diets but make them so costly.

Examples

Keto- I ordered a burger with no bun. Switched out the starchy side for a salad for an extra $2.50. I basically just bought a patty and some romaine for $20. You don’t get extra food in exchange for the things taken out, but they do offer extra meat for an additional cost. I am by no means cheap, but that just seems outrageous to me.

Vegan- Swap out the beef to a veggie burger for an extra $3. Add a fruit salad for $3. It’s pretty much the same situation as eating Keto. I have a soy-based patty that costs pennies to make versus beef but I need to pay a huge premium.
